Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2026: How to Get Involved in the UK

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year Wear It Pink Day is on Friday 23 October 2026. If you’ve landed here wondering what you can actually do about it, this is your list: fundraising ideas that don’t need a JustGiving page, what to do with the bras and clothes you’re not wearing, and where your money goes if you give it to us.

We’re Beat Breast Cancer, a family-run UK charity with a strict 100% donation policy. No trustee wages, no admin skim. Every action below leads somewhere specific.

What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and why does it matter?

It’s the international campaign, held every October, that puts breast cancer back in the headlines for a month: awareness of symptoms, the push to get screened, and a wave of fundraising for research and equipment.

In the UK, breast cancer is the most common cancer. Around 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime, and roughly 59,400 people are diagnosed every year. Earlier diagnosis is still the single biggest factor in survival, which is why so much of October is about equipment and screening as much as ribbons.

We’ve written a fuller breakdown of the UK numbers in our guide to breast cancer statistics in the UK, and if you want to understand symptoms, risk factors and screening in depth, that’s covered on our about breast cancer page. This post is about what to do with the month, not the medicine, so we’ll keep moving.

What does the pink ribbon mean?

A pink ribbon, the international symbol of breast cancer awareness

The pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. It started in the US in the early 1990s as a grassroots symbol handed out at races and events, and by the mid-90s it had become the recognised marker for the cause worldwide, worn on lapels, printed on packaging, and lit up on buildings every October.

Wear It Pink, the UK’s best-known pink-themed fundraising day, is now run by Breast Cancer Now and has been going for more than 20 years. Over two decades it’s raised more than £45 million between bake sales, dress-down days and the odd bra display. You don’t need to be part of a big national campaign to take part, though. Wearing pink and asking for donations works just as well raising money for a small charity as a large one, and every pound raised for Beat Breast Cancer goes to the same place: NHS breast units.

Key dates for October 2026

  • Thursday 1 October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, often called Pink October, begins
  • Tuesday 13 October, Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day, for people living with breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body
  • Friday 23 October, Wear It Pink Day, Breast Cancer Now’s national fundraising day
  • Saturday 31 October, the month ends

There’s no single official global theme for 2026. Each charity runs its own campaign, and ours is simple: every pound raised reaches an NHS breast unit in full.

Ways to get involved this October

You don’t need to organise a 10k or set up a JustGiving page (though you’re welcome to). Here’s what actually moves the needle, starting with the lowest effort.

Fundraise for us

Small, low-effort fundraisers add up faster than people expect. Some ideas that work well in October:

  • A bake sale at work, with a “pay what you like” pink cake table
  • A dress-down or wear-it-pink day, with a suggested £2 donation to take part
  • A raffle with prizes donated by local businesses
  • A sponsored something: a walk, a silence, a haircut, a fitness challenge

Organising something with colleagues? Our breast cancer fundraising ideas at work guide has a planning checklist, a budget example and advice on sending us the money.

Need a sponsor form or a poster? Download ours for free. You can type your details in before printing, and the form includes the Gift Aid declaration, so sponsors who pay UK tax can add 25p to every £1 they give.

If you’re planning something and want it to count towards a registered charity rather than going into a general pot, get in touch with us and we’ll tell you where to send it.

Make a donation

This is the fastest way to help, and with our 100% donation policy, every penny you give goes directly to NHS breast cancer units. Nothing is spent on trustee wages or overheads. You can give one-off or set up a monthly donation on our donate page, by PayPal, bank transfer or cheque. If you’re a UK taxpayer, ticking the Gift Aid box adds another 25% at no cost to you: we’ve explained how Gift Aid works in full.

Clear out your wardrobe

If you’ve been meaning to sort your wardrobe, October is as good a reason as any. Through our partnership with Clothes Relief, unwanted clothing gets collected, sorted and resold, and the proceeds come straight back to us. It costs you nothing but a bit of time.

Donate your old bras

Bras are notoriously hard to recycle and most end up in landfill. Ours don’t have to. Post yours to our recycling partner and they’ll sell them on our behalf, with every penny donated to Beat Breast Cancer. Full details on our bra donation page.

Buy a suit that gives back

If someone in your life needs a three-piece suit this autumn, whether it’s a wedding, an interview or Christmas do, V2 Classic will give you 5% off with the code BEATBREASTCANCER and donate a further 5% of your order to us. It’s one of the easiest ways to support the cause without spending anything extra, and it’s one of several business partnerships that fund our grants without costing supporters anything beyond what they were already spending.

Wear pink

Wear It Pink Day is the simplest way to take part: put on pink, ask your friends, family, workplace or school to do the same, and collect a few pounds for it. You don’t have to sign up through a national campaign to make it count. Run your own collection and donate what you raise directly to us instead.

Check yourself, and book your screening if you’re invited

Awareness Month isn’t just about fundraising. Getting to know what’s normal for your body and following up on any changes matters just as much. If you’re invited for NHS breast screening, go. If you notice something that doesn’t feel right, see your GP rather than waiting it out. We’ve covered how to check yourself and what screening involves in more detail, and the NHS breast screening guidance is worth a read too.

Make October count

Whatever you choose to do, whether that’s a five-minute donation or a month of fundraising, it goes towards equipment and care for NHS breast units, not overheads. We’ve funded grants at hospitals from Royal Blackburn to Guy’s & St Thomas’ and The Christie in Manchester, and every bit of support this October adds to that list.
